How do business classes prepare students for the real world?
High school offers a variety of class selection, many of which are required for those who plan to graduate and/or attend college. Requirements are often a set number of english, math, science, and social studies class; but, what about business? Overachieving students often try to take advanced courses in these subjects; but, what about business? Teachers spends months of time and energy teaching these core subjects that are supposed to prepare their students for the world; but, what about business? In society today, every aspect of life revolves around economy. Making money, spending money, and even saving money are parts of everyday life! Why, then, are we not better prepared to thrive in this real world of commercial economy. True, we leave high school with the ability to interpret Shakespeare and find the area under a bell curve, but how much is this going to help in economical matters? A new emphasis should be placed on business courses in the high school schedule because it is one of the best subjects to prepare students for the real world. Here are some of the ways it prepares:
- Developing Leadership Skills
Few, if any, businesses consist of one head CEO who does all the work alone. Everyone needs a team to give them help. This is incorporated into many business classes by including group projects and activities that give students the chance to work together as a team. This aids in the development of leadership skills as students step out of their comfort zone and make decisions for a group. Not only do they learn to be the boss, but they also learn to be a listener. These are both important aspects in the world of business.
- Learning Computer Basics
It seems like just about every job description should somewhere read: MUST HAVE BASIC COMPUTER SKILLS. Think about it- how many jobs are there that do not require some type of computer interaction. There are a few out there, but for the most part, a basic knowledge of computer skills is required. The earliest business course can supply these, and this at least should be required for all students because of the heightened role of computers in the working world.
- Building Websites
This is taught in the more advanced business courses, but in a few years, will be equally important. The growing economy is becoming more and more centered around electric commerce (the internet). Just about every business has there own website, and many business ARE websites! The art of website building is a very important skill to own, and its importance will only expand in the coming years.
- Learning About Money
Let's face it- this world is based on money! Money cannot buy happiness, but it sure can make it easier to find! Buying, selling, and saving money are aspects of business that are imperative to know. Basic business courses teach students about the stock market, investing, budgeting, and several other important parts of the economy. In fact, this is one of the greatest skills to know to be prepared for the real world.
- Experience Opportunities
Business classes offer opportunities, both inside the class and out, to apply your knowledge of business in a real life situation. Whether it be stimulating a real business and competition with classmates or the chance to intern and learn in the actual working world. These opportunities offer the chance to expand knowledge and be able to apply it to real world situations later on in life.
